How to set up zoom h5.Zoom H5 Audio Recorder
I would be shooting in different venues that would have an in house audio system that I would need to capture as well. I needed a versatile audio setup to adapt to different situations. These recorders are from the same company as the Zoom H4n.
The H6 has 4. I used this as the backup audio channel. This would record whenever the camera was rolling. I call it insurance. I spent one day to scout the building I would be shooting in. This was a great idea because I found out the house audio system had an XLR output. After a firmware update, new memory card, and new XLR, the only problem can be the Zoom.
This is not the review I wanted to write but this is the review YOU need to hear especially if you plan on using the audio interface of this device think: microphone for conference calls, podcasting, live music. As others have said this unit delivers superb audio quality. Its fatal flaw however is in its audio interface. There is a persistent and noticeable distortion in the signal that sounds like the audio is being played through a fan.
This is most noticeable when playing an instrument into the microphone but will show up in vocals as well. Specifically, there is a “warble” or noticeable degradation. This is a hardware limitation of the H5.
It outperforms itself in standalone compared to audio interface. That’s one expensive mistake! And while you can read from line out or even the headphone jack, that’s not its intended use, and there are issues with signal clipping that you simply don’t want to deal with. I am giving one star for dishonest marketing on Zoom’s behalf. Thank you for reading this far! I use one of these in a corporate setting for recording meetings in a conference room.
I have a professional mic that I can connect to my laptop, but using the H5 decouples recording from my computer and gives me more flexibility in placement. It also means I can do other things on my computer, even rebooting if necessary, without losing the recording in progress. The number of options can be overwhelming to a new user, but defaults work fine for most settings.
A little time in the manual, and it quickly becomes intuitive. I honestly thought it would not be very good, with those two tiny microphones, but they are much more directional and of much higher quality than I expected. This isn’t the way to record audiophile-level music, but for meetings or similar applications the quality is excellent. If the person speaking is a little off-mic, you will still get a decent quality recording and can easily amplify their voice in post processing.
No special drivers needed. I have taken it on about a dozen business trips by train, car, and plane, and have even stuffed it into checked luggage. It comes with a protective plastic shell case, which is nicely sized to the device and not overly bulky. I invested in a set of 4 rechargeable AA batteries which work nicely. I get about 3 or 4 hours of continuous use, maybe more, on one charge. See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries.
Okay quality Mic FOR a portable mic. Good product was worth the money, not worth buying as a portable microphone is you care for quality but works well as a relatively good and easy to use plug in for other microphones. Was well worth it. Report abuse. This is an amazing portable recorder. Perfect for recording everything on the spot. Practicing with a microphone in front prepares us for performing live.
This microphone has so many features that I’ve not yet explored them all. Pros: 1. Well built. Quality pre amp and a built in 48V phantom power. All this runs on 2 AA batteries!!! I’ve been using it for 2 weeks and the battery indicator is still showing full. It’s perfect for overdubbing and mixing tracks on the go. For the price, we get 3 simultaneous input sources, headphone monitoring, built in compressor and limiters and a stereo mic for field recording.
Cons: 1. The menu systems will take some time to get used to. The joystick controller on the side is a little loose but it doesn’t affect it’s usage. I can’t think of any other cons. I also have a scarlett 2i2 but I don’t think I’ll be using it that much as this is as good as that interface but is portable and has better pre-amps for the SM58 mic.
I’ve also tested it with condenser mics and it performs brilliantly. You can monitor your recording and the dubbing track simultaneously! It’s the best feature.. Instead of buying Scarlett 2i2, people could buy this and they’d have a portable interface and a recorder!
Highly recommended. Setup is not “obvious” so you must read the manual. Setting it up make sure you don’t have the headphones on because when you do make it work, your volume maybe so high that you’ll get a loud feedback tone , : If you’re using a dynamic mic and need to use your H5 as an interface, you’ll need an inline booster like CloudLifter or FetHead.
The quality of the included mics is “OK” compared to a proper mic but if you’re outside, it makes a great portable recorder. I bought this after watching Booth Junkie’s review of it on Youtube. Look it up, it’s been great so far! Since I’ve used the Zoom H4n extensively. Excellent Recorder. Since I’ve used the Zoom H4n extensively, I knew what would be involved. However, there are some specific improvements on the H4n that must be mentioned. The preamps are cleaner and provide more gain.
Then the headphone output and line outputs have been separated. Most of all, the line output can be attenuated to attempt to match levels on DSLRs like Canon 5Ds which allows for better synch-sound recording.
It can be run off USB power too; giving more flexibility. Finally, it can provide a slate-tone allowing for easier synchronization of audio in post. The modular system of on-board mics may be useful to some people. I am completely satisfied with this purchase. Whether you plan on recording studio condenser mics, a stereo feed from a mixer or wireless receiver, or a lavalier mic for an interview, the H5’s preamps identical to those found in the H6 are ready to deliver low-noise dB EIN performance.
If you happen to setup external microphones in a mid-side configuration, the integrated MS decoder allows adjustment to the perceived width of the stereo image, which is beneficial for sound design, broadcasting, or general stereo-to-mono compatibility. Alternatively, Multi File mode can be utilized for overdubbing in case layers of instruments need to be added after an initial recording. The H5’s internal mixdown function lets you adjust levels and pans as you blend four tracks down to stereo.
Note that media cards are available separately, and larger capacity cards will increase startup times. The USB port also enables fast file transfer and firmware updates. In addition to the dedicated side-panel headphone volume control, the level of the line output can be adjusted via the menu, allowing you to optimize the signal level being sent to your camera without the need for an attenuator cable.
For quick playback reference, a built-in monophonic speaker is also provided. Rugged and Portable, Handheld or Mounted The rubberized, ergonomic body lends itself naturally to handheld use.
Should you need to mount it on a mic stand or tripod, a threaded hole on the back of the H5 obviates the need for stand adapters. Compression and limiting compensate for fluctuations in input level, while a low-cut filter helps eliminate wind noise, blowing, and other kinds of low-frequency rumble. Normalize files for maximum gain, split them into smaller chunks, and even insert up to 99 marks per recording.
There’s an onboard metronome and tuner, and you can loop playback and adjust pitch and speed independently, making the H5 an ideal tool for phrase training. Special Recording Functions The H5 offers selectable recording functions designed to prevent you from accidentally missing the start of a performance.
